Practical Action Consulting carried out an independent review
of primary school classroom and pit latrine designs and
specifications for the Kenya Classroom Design project. The study
included investigating basic facility layouts to determine their
suitability for end users, and an assessment of various design
options.
Kenyan Classroom
A particular focus was the evaluation of structural designs for
classroom pit latrines, to ensure a reasonable hygienic standard.
Special consideration was also given to access options for
physically impaired users.
The consultant advised on design options that would ensure a
comfortable working environment, reduce health and safety risks and
include adaptations for climate change. Methods were also proposed
on how best to present these designs and specifications to
contractors who are unlikely to be formally trained.
